DAY 434 - SANTA ANA VOLCANO

Santa Ana was the first town I stayed the night in El Salvador. I met some nice people in a hostel Casa Verde with which I planned a hike to the Santa Ana Volcano, about an hour south. It's known for it's earthy colours and green-blue coloured crater lake. The hike was strictly organised by the local community. It's only allowed to go up with one group at one moment in the morning. Police is joined to keep an eye on things.

The walk took about 2,5 hours, going from 1800 m at the village to the crater rim at near 2300m. through thick forest It was about 10 degrees colder than in Santa Ana. I sat quiet taking in the views. This is the fourth volcano I’ve climbed and every experience is so different. One thing that’s similar is that the high altitude and absence of life lets the mind breath. There’s nothing here but rocks, wind and the smell of sulfur. The opposite to the abundance of life in the jungle 2000m lower.
