Day 645 - Palccoyo, Peru - 13286 km

Throughout the south of Peru there are many mineral coloured mountain scapes to be found, around altitudes of 5000m. The Rainbow Mountain is the most famous one and receives hundreds of visitors every day. We found out about an alternative location called Palccoyo, a little village about a hundred kms from Rainbow mountain with a much more versatile landscape.

With Cecilia I travelled here from Cusco. We needed a guide because the road is not on most maps. A long dirt trail climbs up slowly via the terraced mountains past many small alpaca farms. The higher you get the more red the soil becomes, which contrasts beautifully with the green grass. Once up we walked along jagged peaks and amazingly coloured mountains under a grim sky with the sun sometimes peaking through. An other worldly landscape.
